The birth of Ella the Spella, the Phenomenal Storytella

Rooted in childhood moments spent listening closely and paying attention to details others often missed, Christina’s love for words, books, spelling and storytelling began long before the stage.

She remembers as far back as Christmas, (around 1979 - or nineteen hundred seventy ten to be exact…:) she overheard her grandmother quietly spelling words for her aunties to go out to the car to gather gifts. Hmmm…to the car she questioned? Befuddled and inquisitive, Christina caught on quickly, wrote the words down, sounded the m out, and from there, discovered, Orville Redenbacher couldn’t hold a candle to her….. .it was on and poppin’. I’d be remised not to mention, when she heard the word “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”andwas determined to learn the proper pronunciation and so it begun! Those moments sparked a fascination with language that would shape her creative voice for years to come.

That curiosity followed her into adulthood. During her academic journey, a creative writing professor once asked her to share a unique fact about herself. She explained that she had the ability to speak rapidly and softly, spell complex words, and use language in a way that captured people’s attention. It makes people lean in and listen when you’re spelling softly and speaking fast. It hooks them, in and now you’ve got them thinking…. I love when that happens, she says. You can see their wheels churching as they ask themselves, “what just happened.” She also remembers the time a former colleague would often spell out the final word of a sentence, like how are you today - t-o-d-a-y? And Christina would respond O.K. - and then spell…..O.K. lol. This unknowingly reinforced the rhythm, wordplay, and linguistic creativity that had already become second nature to her.

It was through these moments that Ella the Spella, the Phenomenal Storytella was birthed, a name and calling rooted in the power of words.

Proverbs 17:22

The best part about being blessed with the gift of laughter is, there are no prescriptions or deductibles however, a small co-payment is sometimes required!
